A drowned volcano with a village balanced on its rim. Come in the shoulder months and it is still one of the great views in Europe.

Overview

Santorini is small enough to cross in forty minutes and crowded enough that timing decides your trip. Stay on the caldera side in Imerovigli rather than Fira, walk the rim path before nine, and keep the black-sand beaches of the south for the afternoons. Ferries connect west to Milos and Folegandros in under three hours, which is how most repeat visitors now build the week.
